PTF Awards for Researchers from the Faculty of Physics, University of Warsaw

2025-08-14

Each year, the Polish Physical Society grants awards to distinguished scientists, young researchers, and teachers, recognizing their achievements in scientific research, the popularization of physics, and physics education. This year, as many as three researchers from our Faculty have been recognized.

Prof. Witold Nazarewicz received the Marian Smoluchowski Medal – the highest distinction awarded by the PTF for outstanding scientific achievements in the field of physical sciences. The PTF acknowledged his “fundamental contribution to the creation, development, and implementation of advanced theoretical methods and tools for the description of atomic nuclei, in particular for groundbreaking research on strongly deformed nuclei, pioneering studies of nuclei asymmetric to spatial reflection, and breakthrough work on the physics of superheavy nuclei and weakly bound nuclei located at the edges of the nuclear chart.”

Dr. Karolina Łempicka-Mirek was awarded the Zygmunt Florenty Wróblewski Prize for the best doctoral thesis in physics. The awarded dissertation, entitled “Exciton-polaritons in optical microcavities with perovskites”, was defended at the Faculty of Physics, University of Warsaw, under the supervision of Dr. Barbara Piętka, associate professor. This award is one of the most prestigious distinctions granted by the PTF, presented to authors of works of exceptional scientific merit that make a significant contribution to the development of physics.

MSc. Jan Krzyżanowski, a doctoral student at the Doctoral School of Exact and Natural Sciences of the University of Warsaw, received the Award for the best master’s thesis in optics and photonics. His research was conducted at the Optical Physics Division of the Faculty of Physics, UW, and the awarded thesis “Enabling two-photon interference by temporal lensing” was prepared and defended under the supervision of Dr. Michał Karpiński.

The awards will be ceremonially presented during the 49th Congress of Polish Physicists, which will take place on September 5–11, 2025, in Katowice. Congratulations to all the laureates, and we wish them continued success in their scientific careers!
