Studies at the University of Warsaw Faculty of Physics
Best in rankings
The Faculty of Physics of the University of Warsaw is among the 300 best units in the world of physics education according to the Shanghai’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects. Our Faculty occupies the first place in the ranking of the journal Perspektywy for Physics and Astronomy.
Excellent staff
We have approx. 1000 students and over 150 doctoral students. The excellent teaching and research staff, with over 250 academic teachers, guarantees a high level of instruction. The research achievements of our staff, many of whom are recognized world authorities in their fields, contribute to the University of Warsaw’s strong international position. The Faculty of Physics, University of Warsaw belongs to the elite group A +, the best scientific units in Poland.
Developed infrastructure
The Faculty of Physics has a well-equipped computer labs with software adapted to the needs of the teaching process, including a set of advanced codes also used in research and industry. In addition to six laboratories in the Computer Center (including the students' workroom available to all students), organizational units of the Faculty have their separate computer laboratories. In the main building (Pasteura 5) you can use wireless networks, including the public network FUW.open and the eduroam network. More information on the IT infrastructure can be found on the Computer Center of the Faculty of Physics (OKWF) website.
Students seeking to learn, work on student projects, develop their passions in a comfortable environment have at their disposal a newly opened space of the Faculty of Physics - Makerspace @ UW, which includes multimedia ‘think tank rooms’, electronic workshop, woodworking workshop together with the equipment (mechanical and electrical tools, electronic equipment with a rich set of components, sensors, 3D printers and UV printer), as well as a special room ‘Hall Horn’ - the southernmost part of the Faculty of Physics. Students can use it for creative meetings. Hall Horn is also a place where trainings with experts are organized. Creative activities at Makerspace@UW are carried out in cooperation with the Incubator UW.
At the Faculty of Physics there is a library containing rich collections in the areas of physics and related sciences.
Modern research equipment
Our Faculty boasts a number of specialized research laboratories equipped, thanks to EU support, with the highest quality apparatus for conducting research in many fields, including of new materials and technologies, nanotechnology, photonics, quantum optics, new medical devices and techniques, biotechnology and bioengineering.
Cooperation with research centers worldwide
Part of our research is conducted in collaboration with the top institutions, such as: CERN (Switzerland), DESY and GSI (Germany), Oxford and Cambridge (United Kingdom), CNRS laboratories (France), Fermilab (USA), J-PARC and the Kamioka Observatory neutrino laboratory (Japan), and others. Thanks to this cooperation, our students enjoy the opportunity to participate in the most important physics experiments currently under way around the world.
Not only science
Students can try their skills in the departmental choir during their free time. The student council is waiting for people who are happy to get involved socially. Intensive activities at the Faculty are also conducted by student scientific assosations.
Graduates sought-after at the labor market
Our graduates, after going through the school of solid thinking, have no problems finding a job. Universities in Poland and abroad, scientific and research institutes, education, high-tech companies, banks, consulting and insurance companies, medical institutions, publishing houses and mass media are waiting for them.
‘For a Start’ courses
Newly admitted students can take part in intensive ‘For a Start’ courses organized in September, before the first semester, the purpose of which is to help the students to catch up in physics and mathematics.
