Time engineering induces topology in quantum systems

The study of time-dependent Hamiltonians has emerged as a vibrant andconsequential field within quantum mechanics. These Hamiltonians playa crucial role in understanding the behavior of quantum systemsgoverned by time-varying potentials, which can give rise to a diversearray of captivating and unforeseen phenomena. In this talk, I willshow that by means of time engineering, i.e., properly selecting theFourier components of the time-dependent part of the FloquetHamiltonian, one can realize new forms of topological physics.Specifically, I will present how such driving allows for the creationof topologically protected edge states that give rise to topologicalmolecules. Furthermore, I will demonstrate how a similar mechanismenables Thouless pumping of atomic interactions, leading to quantized, topologically protected changes of the relative distance betweenatoms.
