γ-H2AX foci in biodosimetry - strengths and limitations
Radiological or nuclear incidents can lead to external exposures by low LET photon irradiation, but will also release alpha- and beta-emitting radionuclide mixtures that contaminate populations in fallout areas. Medical management may involve biodosimetry assays to identify individuals requiring care. The γ-H2AX (and 53BP1) DSB focus assay is a rapid triage tool for detecting irradiated individuals, but individual variability of physiological background foci and other factors can limit its applicability. This contribution will discuss strength and biological and technical limitations of the γ-H2AX DSB focus assay in biodosimetry scenarios.
