High-energy processes in very strong laser fields

The interaction of electrons and atoms with high-intensity laser fieldsmay give rise to highly energetic processes. In the talk, we first givea brief account of the history of strong-field laser physics and thendiscuss some recent theoretical studies on laser-induced phenomena inthe relativistic domain. Those comprise the generation of hard x-raysfrom laser-irradiated ions and quantum electrodynamic processes such asnonlinear Compton scattering and electron-positron pair creation. Finally, the acceleration of particles by intense lasers will beaddressed in view of applications in high-energy physics and medicine.
