Less-empirical nuclear density functional theory
Density functional theory is the most general quantum-mechanical methodfor predicting properties of medium-mass and heavy nuclei. However, progress in the experimental study of heavy and neutron-rich nucleichallenges its accuracy and predictive power. Construction of nucleardensity functionals has been, up to now, mostly phenomenological, whilecurrent efforts aim to supplement this by including knowledge about thenuclear many-body problem in its first-principles formulation. I will present results from the comparison between DFT and coupled-cluster theory as well as progress towards a factorized form of soft, vacuum two- and three-body interactions that promise to make their use feasible in calculations of medium-mass and heavy systems.
