The recent detection of gravitational waves is a breakthrough both in physics and in astronomy. I will describe the details of the discovery, such as the principle of operation of the detectors, their noise budget, as well as the data analysis methods. Moreover I will present the physical and astrophysical consequences of detection of the discovery of black hole coalescence.
