Relativistic description of finite nuclei: successes and challenges

Relativistic description of finite nuclei is based on Dirac equation; this leads to the formulation of covariant density functional theory (CDFT). Within the CDFT the nucleus is described as a system of nucleons which interact via the exchange of several types of mesons. In my talk I will focus on recent advances within the CDFT framework. These are related to the description of single-particle and collective degrees of freedom and their interplay. I will consider the impact of (quasi)particle-vibration coupling on physical observables and its interference with effective tensor force. The role of collective phenomena will be exemplified by fission and rotation of nuclei. I will also present some results related to global description of finite nuclei and related theoretical uncertainties. In conclusion, the lessons learned from these studies will be summarized.
