Light charged particle production in reactions induced by weakly-bound projectiles: Still an open question
It is often assumed that the large inclusive cross sections for production of alpha particles and other light fragments in reaction induced by weakly-bound projectiles are due to breakup. This is in spite of considerable evidence dating back over forty years that transfer reactions actually play the main role. Some of the evidence available in the literature will be reviewed, for the stable weakly-bound nuclei 6Li and 7Li as well as the rather more fragmentary data for radioactive beams like 6He, 8He, 8B etc.
