Drop impact on cold substrate: pattern formation, cracks and fragmentation

When a drop impact on a solid surface, it spreads rapidly until it reaches a maximum. Then depending on the wetting conditions it retracts and different dynamics are observed (rebound, jets, etc…). We investigate here how this general framework is changed when the substrate is very cold, so that the liquid can solidify during the dynamics. We will show that the spreading-retraction dynamics is changed leading to genuine solidified structure. Furthermore, for low enough substrate temperature, the solidified structureexperience high thermal stress so that cracks can appear. In particular, the fragmentation of the structure can be observed for some conditions. We will eventually discuss these results using classical fracture modelling.
