In 2009, Banica and Speicher introduced a tool for studying a class of compact matrix quantum groups and their representation categories – so called categories of partitions. Later it turned out that these structures are a valuable tool that can be used to construct new examples of quantum groups and understand better their structure. Categories of partitions in the sense of the original definition of Banica and Speicher were already classified. Nevertheless, many different generalizations of this concept were introduced bringing new inputs and inspiration to the theory of compact matrix quantum groups.
