Unconvemntional pairing in few-fermion systems tuned by external confinement

The theoretical analysis of the dynamics of quantum tunnelling through a classically forbidden region will be discussed. This research has been motivated by modern experiments in atomic physics that study the dynamical properties of ultra-cold gases. We focus on one dimensional system containing a few correlated particles confined in a potential well, which can tunnel into open space. The analysis is based on exact numerical simulation in which one considers various decay channels of fermions and bosons, such as sequential tunnelling, pair tunnelling, trimer tunnelling, etc. The simulations allow for assessment of relative relevance of the channels for the decay process. It turns out that the dominant decay mechanism changes abruptly as the interaction strength crosses certain critical values.
