Relaxation to steady states of a binary liquid mixture around an optically heated colloid

Relaxation processes are fundamental phenomena in soft and condensed matter physics.The most research attention has been paid to relaxation processes close to equilibrium, which are now well understood. This is not the case for relaxation near nonequilibrium steady states. One of the basic questions here is what determines the time scales for a given system to reach a nonequilibrium steady state and to relax back to equilibrium.
This problem is of particular relevance for light absorbing particles that heat up under laser illumination. In response to an emerging temperature gradient, the surrounding medium restructures giving rise to a variety of curious phenomena, which can be of great practical use.
I will present our recent experimental and theoretical study on relaxation dynamics in a system which over the last decade has become a paradigm for studying various aspects of active matter, i.e., a Janus silica particle half coated by gold and suspended in a binary liquid mixture.

How dissolution is altered by precipitation: a network model of a porous medium

We consider a porous medium infiltrated by a reactive fluid that triggers coupled dissolution/precipitation reactions at pore surfaces. To study these processes, we model the porous medium as a system of interconnected pipes (Budek, 2012) with the diameter of each segment increasing in proportion to the local reactant consumption. We investigate different evolution regimes, analysing the feedback between dissolution and precipitation and considering different models of reactive area evolution, including passivation processes on mineral surfaces. We benchmark the model against the experimental results of Poonoosamy et al. (2020).

Warsaw Soft Matter Day at IChF PAN

Our regular seminars will resume on 13 October, but we kick off the current term with the Warsaw Soft Matter Day, organised on 6 October 2023 at the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

We have the pleasure of inviting all members of our community to this free-for-all, one day semi-formal microsymposium to enable us to better learn what our colleagues in different institutes and departments are doing.
